Bald Head Light

Bald Head Light

The oldest lighthouse in North Carolina, Bald Head Light was built in 1817. It is located on Bald Head Island and stands 110 feet high. The chapel on the island was completed in 1987, and it is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. My first visit to Bald Head Island was with the contractor who built it. On a tour of the chapel I found what I was hoping for - a window near the front with a view of the lighthouse. In January of the following year, I made a special trip to the island to sketch the window and lighthouse. It was a cold and wet day, but the ferry was full. Just my luck: It was a wedding party. When the ferry anchored, I ran to the location in the chapel and quickly began sketching, knowing I didn’t have much time. Over the next 45 minutes to an hour, the chapel slowly started to fill. As the organist entered and began arranging her music, I asked her, “How much more time do I have?” She said, “Ten minutes.” I finished my sketch, took two photographs, and left the chapel half full of people wondering who this stranger with the sketch book was. About nine months later, I had completed the painting and received my first giclee print. I had a show that weekend in Burlington, NC. The festival committee wanted me to go with their representative to appear on The Good Morning Show in Greensboro. One of the pieces I took was the framed Bald Head Light print. At the festival that weekend, a lady from Goldsboro, NC who happened to be in Greensboro that week on business, saw me on the show. Her daughter and son-in-law had been married in the chapel. She loved the symbolism of the crosses on the baptismal font and in the window, as well as the idea that Jesus is the lighthouse. She talked about her daughter’s wedding, which had taken place on a cold, wet day in January of that year. You guessed it: I was sketching right before her daughter’s wedding. And, she got the number one print. Since that time, others who have been married in the chapel on Bald Head Island have found the same beauty and symbolism in this piece.
